Introduction
MovieDisco ("we," "our," or "the app") is a movie recommendation app that uses your Letterboxd profile to suggest films. This policy explains what data we collect, how we use it, and your rights.
Information We Collect
- Letterboxd username. When you create or join a session, you provide your Letterboxd username. We store it locally on your device so you can quickly start a new session.
- Session data. When you use the app, we create and manage sessions that include the Letterboxd usernames of you and any friends you add. Session codes are sent to our servers to generate recommendations.
How We Use Letterboxd Data
To generate recommendations, we use publicly available Letterboxd data for the usernames you provide. This includes:
- RSS feeds – Letterboxd provides RSS feeds for diary entries, reviews, and lists for each member profile. We use these feeds to understand viewing history and preferences.
- Public profile information – Display names and avatars from public Letterboxd profiles.
We only use data that Letterboxd makes publicly available. We do not access private account data or use automated scraping tools.
How We Use Your Information
- Recommendations – To create personalized movie recommendations for you and your group.
- Session management – To connect you with friends in shared sessions and show who is in each session.
- App functionality – To remember your username between app launches (stored only on your device).
Data Sharing
We share Letterboxd usernames with our backend service to generate recommendations. We do not sell or rent your data to third parties.
Third-Party Services
- Letterboxd – We use publicly available Letterboxd data (e.g., RSS feeds) as described above. Your use of MovieDisco is subject to Letterboxd's Terms of Use.
Data Retention
- Local storage – Your username stays on your device until you delete it in settings.
- Server data – Session and recommendation data may be stored temporarily on our servers. We retain it only as long as needed to provide the service.
Your Rights
You can:
- Delete your username – Use the "Delete Username" option in Settings to remove your stored username and return to the welcome screen.
- Stop using the app – You can stop using MovieDisco at any time.
Children's Privacy
MovieDisco is not intended for users under 16. We do not knowingly collect data from children under 16.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy from time to time. We will post the updated version with a new "Last updated" date. Continued use of the app after changes means you accept the updated policy.
